Next Year in Paradise

For all sad words of tongue or pen/The saddest are these, “It might have been!” — John Greenleaf Whittier

Alas . . . not enough writers or Italophiles signed up for the Verona Word/Play extravaganza planned for this coming May and, as yesterday was the registration deadline, I am forced to cancel it.

But you can help me plan for future trips by commenting on this blog post with your answers to these questions.

I’d surely appreciate it. <<Sniff . . .>>

Bevagna, Umbria

  1. This trip was planned for May. Is there a better month/time of year for you?
  2. This trip was planned to be one week long. Would you have preferred something longer or shorter?
  3. This trip was based in Verona. Is there a city or region you would have liked better?
  4. The basic trip cost was $1950 per person (airfare extra). How does that compare with other trips you’ve looked at?
  5. Are you going to Europe in 2011? If so, where? Would you share a little about the trip you’ve chosen?
  6. How far in advance do you usually commit to trips of this nature — 6 months? one year? longer?
  7. Is there anything else you think I should know to help me with future trip offers?

Grazie mille e buon viaggio!

You might get more takers if you did it after the school year is over. Maybe early June.

Linda,
I just read about the cancellation———–so sorry, I was really hoping to go !!! As far as answering any of the questions you posed, I think date, duration, venue, price, etc, etc, were all perfect for me.
Please try again, maybe in the fall.

Hi Linda, it all sounded great to me. I am planning a trip in Fall 2012, otherwise I would have signed up. I like more notice 6 months to a year so I can plan and save.

I think my friend may back out, so my plans may change. That won’t keep me from going. Hopefully one week in Tuscany and another in Provence.

November 1 is Reclamation Day

There was only one sign for pumpkin spice anything, and it was at the train station in Rome. Starbucks, of course, and my apologies to all who love the fall-themed brew. But then there was the Trick or Treat sign on the Irish pub (!) in my Italian town of Sulmona. It was jarring. Halloween hasn’t yet come to Italy in a big way, and that’s fine with me. Call me a grump. Because the rest of the year (as most of you know) I live in Salem, Massachusetts where, over the past 20 years, Halloween starts in early September and runs through mid-November. The crowds are staggering – nearly one million people come into town on Halloween weekend alone.…
