The Best Good Girl

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went — Will Rogers

The rain on my window was hard one day last week. It pounded in a rhythm of threes — tap, tap, tap — that gave me pause. I stopped what I was doing and listened. Tap, tap, tap. It sounded exactly like our dog drinking water. Maxine always drank in threes. We thought it was a bit odd, but figured, as with all references to three, that there must be some Biblical significance to it. Not.

But of course, it couldn’t be Maxine. Maxine left us on February 4th at 11:30 p.m. at Angell Memorial in Jamaica Plain. She straddled both our laps and crossed over. Lots of sobbing. Massive headaches. General shitiness all around.

That’s why you haven’t heard from me in a few weeks. We are still grieving the loss of our little girl and plan to be doing so for a number of months or more. We had her for 15 years and she was our only child. A very special furry child who was alternately loving and maddening, amusing and aloof, needy and independent. It was our job to figure out her mood each day and act accordingly. We were very well trained.

Our friends have been wonderful, sending cards and making calls, and installing many hugs on our sad frames. This too shall pass, I know, and a new puppy will help at some point. Our friend Jim says it’s really hard to grieve for your old dog when you’re watching a new puppy doing stupid stuff. I know we’ll experience that, but not right now.

Maxine had aliases. Her formal name was Lady Maxine of the Ozarks, but she was also known as Beanie, Varmsky, Lady Maxine, Lady Meatloaf, Varmit, Waldo Puppercorn, The Bean, Maxeenie Dini Beanie, and to her grandmother — Her Ladyship. She seldom answered to any of them. She was her own dog, for sure.

I know a lot of you have experienced the same thing and I’m sorry for your loss, no matter how long ago it was, because I know nobody ever gets over this. Not really.

At least I’ve got Italy to look forward to. Maybe there’ll be a new addition when we get back. You’ll be the first to know.

Buon viaggio!

So sorry to hear the sad news about Maxine, Beanie, et al.

We are happy to have had a chance to be with her back in November and join her morning and evening constitutionals with Max and her staff. She was quite a gal!

Our Sadie is getting long in the tooth as well. An infinitely happy 87 lb. Black Lab with a Ghandi soul and a William Wallace heart. Your story touched touched us (as we augment her meals with many mgs of glucosomine).

Just like your “Ladyship,” our Sadie (aka Guillermo, Chill, Beasty B., Sexy Sadie, etc.) requires her long morning and nightly constitutionals and will fearlessly drag us down “her” assigned paths when we try to shorten the walk and cut off a block or two. Endlessly congenial and cordial, ever-so-gentle with children and old folk, she will never start a “scrap” but will respond with great authority when snapped at by other beasts with inappropriate intentions. The now insecure Doberman up the street tiptoes and backtracks when she passes by, having learned a difficult lesson a few seasons back.

Alas, we wax about our children, both 4-legged and 2-legged, but we go with Will Rogers on this one. We may sidle over to the doggie side if we are, by providence, admitted up yonder. We cannot imagine any heaven that would not be graced by the calming, generous acceptance of our dear Canine friends.

We will miss Lady Max and pray for your recovery in your time of loss. A trip to the tulips in Holland in May might be the soothing elixir you need to help assuage the pain.

With love from David, April, Austin, Trina,Devin, Martha, and Sadie-dog (arff).

Thanks to all the Beatties for this wonderful note. We are bereft, but know that she is in a better place now, out of pain and running again, which she could not do for the last two weeks of her life. Hold on to your Sadie — they are never with us long enough. Thank you for the invitation to Holland — it is something we would love to do, but this May we will be in our beloved Italia for 3 weeks. Perhaps when we get back it will be time for some pup hunting. Be well, my friends . . . Lydia

Linda & Tim, Andy & I know so well the heartache…everyday. As ever wise, my friend take that time for the honor of this love. Its been 16 months since we saw our “baby girl” Kyrie. Those first three months I wrote every trait – not to loose a single memory of her. Sometimes we get to hear her “ca-plunk” from jumping to the floor. Andy looks for her every night and when our prayers are answered, she graces our dreams. Truth told pet loss started me journaling. I still have the picture I drew at age 8 of my dog Lucky smiling. Grande Dame, Peanut, The Destroyer, Kyrie too had aliases. Having met the most marvelous, hospitable Maxine, I’m partial to “Best Good Girl” and know absolutely she is very fine in her spirit form looking after you. So much love to you guys, Lynda

November 1 is Reclamation Day

There was only one sign for pumpkin spice anything, and it was at the train station in Rome. Starbucks, of course, and my apologies to all who love the fall-themed brew. But then there was the Trick or Treat sign on the Irish pub (!) in my Italian town of Sulmona. It was jarring. Halloween hasn’t yet come to Italy in a big way, and that’s fine with me. Call me a grump. Because the rest of the year (as most of you know) I live in Salem, Massachusetts where, over the past 20 years, Halloween starts in early September and runs through mid-November. The crowds are staggering – nearly one million people come into town on Halloween weekend alone.…
